Contraception

The gynaecological team at Woman & Health offers various methods of contraception. The first step is of course an individual consultation, in which requirements and special features are also discussed.

Long-term contraception

The Woman & Health team offers you various methods of long-term contraception:

Copper IUD

The exact mode of action of the copper IUD has not been fully researched. What is certain is that the copper, which is constantly secreted in small amounts, changes the structure of the uterine lining so that no fertilised egg can implant in the uterus.

In addition, the sperm's mobility is restricted by the copper, so that fertilisation cannot take place. Apart from this, the IUD also triggers a defensive reaction of the uterine lining against the foreign body.

Hormone IUD

The hormone coil consists of a plastic cylinder containing the corpus luteum hormone levonorgestrel. This hormone cylinder is attached to an elastic plastic T that ensures a secure hold in the uterus.

The hormone coil is inserted directly into the uterine cavity. The IUD is not noticeable and provides a very high level of contraceptive safety from day one, which lasts up to 5 years.

Small amounts of the hormone are released slowly and evenly in the uterine cavity. Unlike other hormonal contraceptive methods (e.g. the birth control pill), the hormonal IUD does not suppress ovulation so you maintain your natural cycle.

Copper chain

The copper chain is a modern intrauterine device (IUD) that is implanted into the uterine wall. This special feature makes it impossible to lose the IUD. The copper chain is completely different from traditional IUDs because it is frameless and therefore causes fewer side effects than traditional copper/gold IUDs (such as increased menstrual bleeding). The copper chain is tiny and, once applied correctly, securely anchored in your body.

Because the copper chain is extremely flexible, it adapts harmoniously to the given anatomical conditions, regardless of any physical activity and regardless of the time of the cycle. Therefore, side effects such as bleeding, pain or falling out are extremely rare events. The Mini copper chain is the first copper coil that does not lead to increased menstrual bleeding. Increased period bleeding is the main reason why copper IUDs are rejected.

Hormone implant

The hormone implant is a flexible rod, about four centimetres long and two millimetres thick, which is inserted under the skin on the inside of the upper arm – the rod can be felt. It contains a progestogen, a hormone in the corpus luteum, of which very small amounts are continuously released into the bloodstream.

Similar to the pill, this hormone prevents ovulation. The hormone implant provides very reliable contraceptive protection for 3 years. After that, it must be removed by the gynaecologist.

IUB – the Intra Uterine Ball

A new contraceptive with a "memory”

The IUB is a high-tech contraceptive. The flexible carrier thread with the so-called "shape memory" is special: no pointed ends, no sharp edges that could irritate the uterus. As soon as the carrier thread together with the copper beads has slipped through the thin inserter into the uterus, the copper bead ball “remembers” its three-dimensional past and takes on its round shape again. What then looks like an elastic ball stays well in the uterus. This also reduces the risk of the IUB being expelled by the uterus.

As with the conventional copper IUD, the contraceptive effect is based on the use of copper in the uterus, which has been tried and tested for over four decades. The copper is threaded onto a thin wire in the form of beads just under two millimetres in diameter. The amount of copper is about the same as in a conventional IUD.

Because of the thin insertion tube, insertion is painless. The smooth, round shape of the copper bead ball makes it very tolerable. Due to these properties, the risk of uterine perforation is virtually non-existent.

Sterilisation

For those who have finalised the planning for their personal circumstances, or if there is a medical need, male or female sterilisation can also be performed at Woman & Health. In both cases, these are extremely reliable methods of definitive contraception.

Female sterilisation

Female sterilisation involves ligature or cutting of the fallopian tubes, blocking the path of the sperm to the ovary or the egg to the uterus. The procedure is performed by laparoscopy of the abdomen under a short general anaesthetic.

The natural cycle remains intact, ovulation continues to take place as a result, and permanent infertility is largely – and immediately – guaranteed. For this reason, the procedure is not usually performed when the patient is under 25 years of age.

In some cases, hormone fluctuations and early menopausal symptoms can occur after sterilisation. Note: Sterilisation does not protect from the risk of STIs.

Male sterilisation (vasectomy)

Male sterilisation, also known as vasectomy, is a surgical procedure in which the spermatic ducts (ductus deferens) in the man's scrotum are cut or blocked. This operation is performed under local anaesthetic. Both the hormone production of the testicles and the erectile function are preserved, and contraception is considered reliable from about 3 months after the operation.

In rare cases, chronic pain may occur as a side effect, also known as post-vasectomy pain syndrome, as well as fibrosis (growth and hardening of the connective tissue) or testicular reflux. Reoperation is generally reported to have a patency rate of 80%, and the chances of success – after initial surgery – are up to ten years.
