Emergency contraception with the "morning-after pill" is possible for up to 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse, or for up to five days with a new preparation. However, the earlier this medication it is taken, the safer its effect.
There are hardly any side effects such as nausea and vomiting; only the next menstrual period can occasionally be delayed.
The new generation of the morning-after pill is effective up to five days after a contraceptive breakdown – it is even more effective than with previous preparations, which have to be taken within three days. To ensure optimal post-coital contraception, a morning-after pill should generally be taken as early as possible. The new generation already offers 3-4% more safety within the first 24 hours than other morning after pills. This guaranteed protection (up to 98%) remains in place for the following 5 days, whereas the emergency contraceptive effect of the conventional morning-after pill decreases significantly after 24 (up to 72) hours.
At Woman & Health, the morning-after pill is available daily between 9.00 and 21.00.
IUD, copper chain, copper ball Afterwards
IUDs, copper chains or copper balls work even more reliably up to 5 days after unprotected sexual intercourse.
The IUD is particularly suitable for women who want emergency contraception as well as long-term protection. One hour before insertion of the IUD or copper chain, it is advisable to take a special tablet, as this dilates the cervix and the insertion of the IUD – especially outside of your period – is perceived as relatively painless.
If you wish, the copper IUD, hormone IUD or copper chain can be inserted under a very gentle, short anaesthetic. In this case the procedure is completely painless and takes about 5 minutes. The patient then rests in our recovery room for about 20 minutes for aftercare.
